Dialect keigo, 来はった, and keigo in new media

Sep 10, 2026

Kansai 来はった

「どちらから来はったんですか」 sits between blunt 来た and heavy いらっしゃった — local moderate elevation with warmth. Dialect keigo can also mark in-group differently from standard Japanese (including some uses toward family). Don’t judge local systems only by Tokyo textbook rules.

Ch.1 caveats still missing from shorter posts

Dialect diversity, generation/gender taste shifts, and new media (email, chat, announcements) all change what “appropriate” means. Manual scripts that ignore channel and scene create the oddness we covered as manual keigo. Learn the five-type system first, then judge by scene — including whether Slack weight should stay near teineigo.
