させていただく: common, overused, not banned

Sep 10, 2026

「させていただく」 is everywhere — and often overused. “Avoid it” and “hear it everywhere” can both be true. It is not banned; it is conditioned.

Natural when their allowance is real

Input
I would like to leave early today if that is alright.
Natural Japanese
もし差し支えなければ、本日早めに失礼させていただきたく存じます。

Early leave asks for their consideration — a real “may I?” So させていただく fits.

Just doing your job — usually drop it

Input
I will send the documents.
Natural Japanese
書類を送付いたします。

Ordinary sending does not need a permission ritual. Cleaner than 送付させていただきます — test: is there a real “may I?” If not, don’t force it.

Need it every sentence? That’s often anxiety leaking, not respect. OK when their allowance / care is in play; heavy when it only adds humble perfume to routine work.
